What are Composite Leading Indicators (CLI)?

Composite Leading Indicators (CLI) are economic indicators designed by the OECD to provide early signals of turning points in business cycles. They reflect fluctuations in economic activity around its long-term potential level and typically lead GDP by 6-9 months.

Adjustment Types

AA (Amplitude Adjusted) ⭐ Recommended - Scaled to match the amplitude of the de-trended reference series (GDP). This is the "headline indicator" used by the OECD for official CLI releases. Best for identifying short-term cyclical movements and turning points.
NOR (Normalized) - Standardizes component series to a common scale. Useful for comparative analyses across different countries or sectors.
TR (Trend Restored) - Combines the amplitude-adjusted CLI with the trend of the reference series. Shows both cyclical fluctuations and long-term trends.

Measure Types

LI (Leading Indicator) - The main Composite Leading Indicator series
RS (Reference Series) - Typically GDP, used as the reference for CLI construction
BCICP - Business Confidence Indicator - Composite
CCICP - Consumer Confidence Indicator - Composite

Frequency

M - Monthly frequency (most common)
Q - Quarterly frequency

Interpreting the Data

Values above 100 (or above trend): Economic activity is expected to increase
Values below 100 (or below trend): Economic activity is expected to decrease
Rising CLI: Signals expansion ahead
Falling CLI: Signals contraction ahead
